If there is one shared tradition among major animation studios, it’s that they apparently have no problem dropping trailers out of nowhere. Enter Warner Animation Group as the latest example.
This week, the first full trailer for Storks has dropped online. Watch the entire thing below:
Take note of how unexpectedly short this trailer is compared to those for other movies. It’s just barely a minute and it goes by rather quickly. Even the teaser trailer ran longer than that!
Moving on, the trailer does lay down a simple, swift overview of the film’s story and does so in a way that is surprisingly entertaining and funny. With its first original feature, it appears that Warner Animation Group is taking a page from the Pixar’s playbook in terms of the premise itself (storks now deliver babies via an Amazon-style delivery service) which isn’t a bad place to start. The point of departure (or even comparison) will be in the film’s overall execution, but what I’ve seen thus far looks promising.
Those things put aside, Storks can be viewed as something of a test for Warner Animation Group. Its entry into the feature animation world with The LEGO Movie was nothing short of incredible, and it’s given its parent company (Warner Bros.) an animated film franchise to call its own. But if the company can do that well with a franchise-starter (critically and commercially), then surely it can do just as great with an original feature.
Storks is directed by Doug Sweetland and Nicholas Stoller from a screenplay written by Stoller. The announced cast members include Andy Samberg, Kelsey Grammer, Keegan Michael-Key, Jordan Peele, Catie Crown, and Danny Trejo.
Storks flies into theaters on September 23, 2016.
