ABC just gave The Muppets a full season order! While this only brings the number of episodes up to 16, instead of the standard 22, this should be enough to calm any fears about the show’s imminent cancelation.
Ratings for The Muppets started out high, with about 9 million viewers for the first episode, but slowly dwindled down to around 4.3 million, which prompted fears of its impending cancellation. Such a drop is to be expected with any new show and, despite the decline in ratings, The Muppets is still ABC’s strongest performing Tuesday sitcom in four years, according to EW.
While the addition of just three new episodes is a little disappointing, it’s far better than the alternative. Numerous new shows this season have seen their initial 13 episodes trimmed back, according to Variety. This addition of episodes, even if it’s just three, is still a sign ABC has faith in the show and is willing to give it time to grow.
