The Last Unicorn is an underrated animated classic that combines the best of western storytelling
and Japanese-style animation. The film has acquired a cult following with many fans praising the story of the last unicorn on Earth as she journeys to follow others of her kind. During her quest, she encounters Schmendrick the Magician and Molly Grue, who join her in tracking down the the cause for the unicorns’ disappearance.  The trio discover that King Haggard and his Red Bull are responsible.  With a bit of powerful magic that transform the unicorn into a human woman, they infiltrate King Haggard’s castle and befriend his son, Prince Lira.  The unicorn, however, has second thoughts about finding her people and might have fallen in love with the prince.

It’s a beautiful story that takes the standard fairytale story and reimagines it with modern conventions.  Peter S. Beagle, the author, has faced many difficulties with the animated film (listen to episode 61 of the Animation Addicts Podcast for more information), but in the past two years he has found much success in The Last Unicorn tour.

Accompanied by his business partner Connor Cochran, Mr. Beagle travels across the globe to present screenings of The Last Unicorn with a meet & greet and film discussion.  These screenings are very entertaining, not only because you get to see the movie on the big screen, but also due to Mr. Beagle providing commentary and insights on the film and book.

Mr. Beagle and Mr. Cochran have the The Last Unicorn tour scheduled through summer 2016, so it’s bound to come to a city near you.  Visit The Last Unicorn tour’s website for more information and schedule dates.
