It hasn’t been too long since we last reported updates regarding the release dates of upcoming films in the LEGO movie franchise. The only significant change was the release date of The LEGO Movie 2, now set for a 2018 release window (with the possibility of its original date being taken by LEGO Batman). Even though the film won’t be out in theaters for another four years, we now have new reports about a couple of familiar faces who will be in charge of the script.

According to Screen Rant, director/writer/producer duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller are now attached to The LEGO Movie 2 as the primary screenwriters in addition to being the producers. This isn’t the first time that they’ve stuck around in a reduced capacity for a sequel to one of their films. They were credited (along with writer Erica Rivinoja) as having came up with the story for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.

This development now puts the duo in a stronger position to possibly return as the directors since Chris McKay, the animation supervisor for the first film and previously set to direct the sequel, has stepped down from the position to helm LEGO Batman instead. Granted, this only remains a possibility for the time being, as they have other projects competing for their attention (they will be rebooting the Greatest American Hero TV series for Fox).

Time will tell if the duo really wants to make a full-on commitment to the directors’ chairs for this one, but seeing as how their collective vision worked wonders for the first film both critically and commercially, there certainly won’t be too much concern if they decide to do so.

The LEGO Movie 2 lands in theaters sometime in 2018.

What are your thoughts? Would you want them back as directors or should somebody else take a shot at it?
