Animated faith-based entertainment has been seeing a bit of a resurgence, with a Noah’s ark-inspired animated film being developed courtesy of Kung Fu Panda director John Stevenson, and a new VeggieTales series being concocted by DreamWorks as part of their ongoing distribution deal with Netflix. Now Sony Pictures Animation is throwing its hat into the ring, in addition to adding to its growing list of upcoming projects.
According to Animation Magazine, Sony is developing The Lamb, an animated take on the Christian nativity story. DeVon Franklin, a preacher and motivational speaker who’s made an appearance on Oprah, will be producing the film under his new production company Franklin Entertainment.
Based on a pitch by Tom Sheridan, the film’s story details are not known at the moment, but the film will feature an all-animal cast.
This project joins a long list of eclectic projects that Sony Pictures Animation has in development, including Manimal with Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, Medusa with My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic creator Lauren Faust helming, a live-action/CGI Sonic The Hedgehog, an animated reboot of The Smurfs, an adaptation of Angry Birds, and a small slate projects from director Genndy Tartakovsky, which includes Hotel Transylvania 2, an animated Popeye film, and an original project titled Genndy Tartakovsky’s Can You Imagine?.
That’s quite a diverse lineup from Sony Pictures Animation. If there’s anything to be said about these guys, they sure do pick the most unique projects to make.
A release date for The Lamb has not been announced.
What do you think of ‘The Lamb’? Any thoughts on Sony Picture Animation’s lineup?
