Alpha-and-Omega-2-A-Howl-iday-Adventure-dvd-blu-ray-cover-artThere were rumors that a sequel to Lionsgate’s 2010 animated film Alpha and Omega was in the works, but up until this point, we hadn’t heard anything. Turns out that the sequel, entitled Alpha and Omega 2: A Howl-iday Adventure, is a direct-to-video sequel, which will be available October 8.

The sequel follows the adventures of Kate, Humphrey and their three cubs. But when the runt of the litter, who’s creatively named Runt, suddenly disappears, the family must travel across the wilderness to find him and bring him back.

While not directly a Christmas film, Alpha and Omega 2 certainly seems to want to position itself to capture some of the lucrative Christmas DVD market. The pine trees covered in snow on the cover and ‘Howl-iday’ in the cover seemed to give it away.

Here’s the official synopsis below:

“Kate, Humphrey and their 3 wolf cubs (Stinky, Claudette and Runt) are happily preparing to celebrate their first winter together when their smallest cub, Runt, mysteriously disappears. They must now go on a new journey across the wilderness to find Runt and bring him back before the snow blocks their way home. It’s their greatest adventure yet, filled with action and suspense as well as plenty of the humor and heartwarming moments that were delivered in the first theatrical release. While their adventure does not end exactly as planned, Kate & Humphrey discover that ‘Home is where the Family Is.’”

I never saw the first Alpha and Omega, but the film did marginally well. It made $50 million in the box office, and with a $20 million budget, that’s not that shabby of a return on investment. Alpha and Omega 2: A Howl-iday Adventure will be the first in a series of direct-to-video films.

Considering it’s a direct-to-video sequel, the majority of the original cast has returned (making us think that this was set for a theatrical release at some point). The cast includes returnees Justin Lang as Humphrey, Hayden Panettiere as Kate, Christina Ricci as Lilly, Chris Carmack as Garth, Danny Glover as Winston, and Vicki Lewis as Eve. It also includes newcomers Jane Lynch as Terra, Ed Asner as Slash and Aziz Ansari as Simon Piglet.

Alpha and Omega 2: A Howl-iday Adventure hits DVD, Blu-ray and VOD on October 8, 2013.
