Planes 2: Fire and Rescue will head to theaters July 18, 2014 in 3D from Disneytoon Studios, as shared by Stitch Kingdom.
Talks of a sequel to the Cars spinoff have gone around for a while, but it was not until today that an official confirmation was made by Disney itself. Specific plot details are unknown.
This comes before the first Planes has even released, but it follows the model Disneytoon paved with its popular Tinker Bell films: build an intentional franchise from the beginning without waiting to see if the public latches on. That’s a lot of confidence to have, but it worked for Tink… just take a gander at the lines to meet the fairies at Disneyland and it’s clear that that gamble paid off.
Disney is trying to get word to the public on just who Disneytoon is. A piece this week on Disney Post, the corporation’s official blog, laid out the differences between Disney Animation, Pixar, and Disneytoon. They’re doing their best, but I still have a feeling many moviegoers will misunderstand who made this movie.
Nevertheless, Planes zooms into theaters August 9, 2013, and right behind it is Planes 2: Fire and Rescue July 18, 2014. And unlike our April Fool’s joke about Cars 3, we’re dead serious about this one.
