Avengers: Endgame is now available on Blu-ray, and we've got all the details! Read on for a spoiler-free mini-review of the film, and a breakdown of all the Blu-ray extras!

The Movie

I don't know how much I can say about this movie without spoiling it for people who haven't seen it yet, but I will say that this is literally one of the best films in the MCU. I didn't know what to expect after Infinity War, which I really liked, but I didn't love. It was a great movie, but as was to be expected, it was a bit of a downer. Which is fine, that's what it needed to be in order to gear up for this one.

That said, Endgame surpassed Infinity War in every possible way. Number one, despite the apparent finality of some of the deaths, the ending was nowhere near the downer that the last one was. Most of my favorite characters got a lot more screen-time, including probably my most favorite MCU character, Ant-Man, who was pretty much the most pivotal character in the entire film. Which I especially appreciated, given that he wasn't in the last one at all.

All in all, Endgame was one of the best films the MCU has produced so far. It had heart, humor, twists, and turns, and was everything I wanted from the movie, and so many things I didn't know I needed. It was amazing, and definitely not to be missed.

The Extras

There are a lot of great extras in this set, we've got character retrospectives, interviews, outtakes, and deleted scenes! Let's get in to everything this set has to offer! We'll start with disc one.

Visionary Intro – Intro by directors Joe and Anthony Russo

First off we have an intro by Russo Brothers, the directors of Endgame, you're given the option to play this before the movie if you so choose.

Audio Commentary

Next we have an audio commentary by the directors and writers, Anthony and Joe Russo, and Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely. Commentaries are always a nice inclusion. It seems like they're getting rarer and rarer these days, so I love it when the studios take the time to get one together.

It's kind of rare that Blu-rays have two discs these days, but given the length of the film, maybe all these extras wouldn't fit on just one. Either way, this is what's on disc two.

Remembering Stan Lee

An absolutely joyful look back at he MCU cameos of Stan Lee. I rarely tear up at things, but I may have been a bit misty eyed at the end of this one. Stan Lee was such a treasure, and this was a beautiful look back at his time in the MCU.

Setting The Tone: Casting Robert Downey Jr.

Given where Endgame ends up going, it only makes sense to look back at the origins of the founding characters. This featurette looks back at what went in to the casting Robert Downey Jr. in the role of Iron Man, back at the very beginning of the MCU.

A Man Out of Time: Creating Captain America

Likewise, Captain America's story is another big culmination in Endgame, so in this one, we're looking back at what went into the creation of the MCU version of his character. From the casting of Chris Evans, to the creation of the ideals of the character, to the artwork that brought him to life.

Black Widow: Whatever It Takes

Yes there is FINALLY a standalone Black Widow movie coming, but given where her story goes in this film, it only makes sense to give her a retrospective featurette as well. This one, more than the other two, looks back at the character more than the behind the scenes.

The Russo Brothers: Journey to Endgame

This featurette is like the previous three, except about real people instead of characters. Joe and Anthony Russo are just as important to the MCU as the characters they're bringing to life. Their vision has shaped these stories, and this featurette is a great way to get to know their contributions.

The Women of the MCU

A short featurette looking at the women of the MCU, featuring interviews with the actors behind the characters, talking about what the characters mean to the fans, and themselves.

Bro Thor

Unlike the other retrospective featurettes on this set, this one looks at the character of Thor in this movie alone. Thor's character arc took him in a completely new direction in Endgame, and this featurette looks into the processes behind his transformation.

Deleted Scenes

Six deleted scenes from the movie. I'll list the titles, but I'll let you discover what they are when you watch them. “Goji Berries,” “Bombs on Board,” “Suckiest Army in the Galaxy,” “You Used to Frickin’ Live Here,” “Tony and Howard,” and “Avengers Take a Knee.” Most of these are a bit forgettable, but I kind of wish that last one had made it into the final film.

Gag Reel

Sometimes when you're watching a gag reel, it feels like they really had to scrape the bottom of the barrel to piece enough stuff together to make anything even close to worth watching. That was not the case here! The people in these films really seem like they're having a blast, and the gag reel shows that. This was a fun watch.

Final Thoughts

If you are a fan of the MCU, you owe it to yourself to see this film. I know most of you reading this have probably already seen it, but for the three of you out there who were waiting for the home release, don't wait any longer! The film itself is worth buying the set for, but there are plenty of extras here for fans who want to dive in deeper. Definitely check this one out.

Walt Disney's Cinderella is being re-released on Blu-ray today as part of the Walt Disney Signature Collection. With some brand new bonus features for 2019, and plenty of old ones, if you don't own this film yet, now is the perfect time to buy it.

The Film

Cinderella is a classic Disney movie, beloved by millions. This story has been made and remade countless times, but Disney's version will always be the definitive version for so many people. From the animation, to the music, to the characters, good and evil; everything about this movie is absolutely iconic.

Personally I love the characters in this film. Cinderella's Fairy Godmother is one of the best non-mother, maternal characters of early Disney. She's funny, cute, she has a great musical number, and really, if you want to get right down to it, she's the one who saves Cinderella. She just used the Prince as kind of a fortunate byproduct of Cinderella's desire to escape her awful family for a night.

Lady Tremaine is one of Disney's best villains, and not because she has powerful magic and wants to rule the kingdom, world, sea, or universe. No, her brand of villainy is subtle, manipulative, and human. She is a very human version of evil, and to me, that makes her more terrifying than your Maleficents or your Ursulas, any day.

Even the side characters are great. Cinderella's animal friends are cute and fun, the royal family is entertaining, even if the prince isn't developed as much as some would like, and Cinderella's step-sisters are perfectly, and hilariously, horrid.

Cinderella herself is such a great character, even if she has gotten a bad rap in recent years. People like to criticize her for not standing up for herself, being too subservient, and just not having any admirable qualities in general for kids to look up to. However if you actually watch this film, you'll realize that none of this could be further from the truth!

Cinderella is such an admirable character in so many ways that no one seems to give her credit for. Her family is awful, but she can't just pull a Mulan and fight her way out of a bad situation. In her day and age, she really doesn't have many options of where she can go if she did leave her family, so she's kind of caught between a rock and a hard place.

Cinderella chooses to make the best of a bad situation, which is arguably harder than leaving. She is kind and loyal to her friends, and all of this, at least to me, is definitely someone I would aspire to be like. Cinderella has the kind of attitude I can only wish I had some days, and my job is nowhere near as degrading as hers!

Aside from the characters, this movie is just a masterpiece on so many levels. The backgrounds, animation, and design, based on the great Mary Blair's artwork, is all top-notch, classic Disney. Just gorgeous to look at. And the music in this film is so well written, so memorable, so catchy, and just so good, that it is used to this day, almost 70 years later, even more than so many of the other movies that have come after it.

There's not much more I can say about the film itself that hasn't already been said, though I will add, for animation purists, it is worth noting that the version presented in the Signature Edition, is the same restored version included in the Diamond Edition from 2012. Some fans felt that the transfer was too bright, and some of the subtler details were being washed out, so if you were looking for an original, untouched version of the film, sadly, you'll have to keep looking.

If you would like more Cinderella content, check out our previous review of the film, in addition to our review of the Cinderella Diamond Edition Blu-ray.

Bonus Features

Since we're here to talk about the Blu-ray, let's take a look at the list of everything that's included. There are two new bonus features made exclusively for this set, so let's look at those first.

There's a brand new trailer out right now for Cartoon Network's upcoming show, Infinity Train! Infinity Train is a mysterious new show from Regular Show writer, Owen Dennis, which looks to be somewhere in the vein of Gravity Falls and Adventure Time.

There are currently two ways to watch this teaser, and one of them involves a bit of sleuthing on the part of the viewer. Two days ago a mysterious teaser was uploaded to the Cartoon Network YouTube channel.

Captain Marvel is now available to own on Blu-ray and Digital HD! If you're a Captain Marvel fan, then you'll definitely want to get yourself a copy, but for the average superhero fan and casual fans of the MCU in general, let's dive into everything this set has to offer, and see if it's worth picking up a copy.

The Film

Captain Marvel is definitely not the biggest movie in the MCU this year, but if it had come out in a non-Endgame year, it would certainly be able to hold its own with most any other film in the series.

Personally I really enjoyed getting to know Carol, I was not very familiar with the character beyond her name, but I thought this film did a great job introducing us to Captain Marvel and all the supporting players in her story. I also loved getting more Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, and even if he's not a title character in this film, this story is almost as much his as it is Carol's.

I also loved that they crafted this film in such a way as to keep her backstory as a mystery that needs to be solved over the course of the film. To me that made the film so much more engaging than just watching her origin story play out in the same way that the other heroes' stories have unfolded.

I've always been a bigger fan of the DC heroes than the Marvel heroes, but the MCU has always done a far better job of telling their hero's stories than the DC films have, and this one is no exception. Captain Marvel has everything I love in a superhero film, from humor, to aliens, to epic sci-fi action.

My favorite MCU films are always the ones that focus more on the sci-fi aspect of the universe, and Captain Marvel does exactly that. Carol Danvers may technically be a human, but the twists and turns that her story takes, make her story one of the most science-fiction heavy in the MCU, after the Guardians of the Galaxy films, and I loved that. I can't wait to see what comes next for the character.

The Extras

If you're already familiar with the movie, then this is the section you probably came here for. What kind of extras does the set have? Does it have deleted scenes? Bloopers? I mean, these are the questions I always ask! Let's dive in and find out.

All the bonus features listed here are from digital copy, so every extra may not be included depending on which version you play. If you get the Blu-ray/Digital set though, you should get everything I'm talking about here.

Final Thoughts

If you're a Captain Marvel fan, an MCU fan, or you just like cool sci-fi movies, I'd say check this set out. The movie itself is a lot of fun, and there's something for everyone in the bonus features.

Purchase Captain Marvel

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was one of the biggest surprises of 2018! I don't think anyone expected a movie like this from the studio that brought you the Emoji Movie, but somehow this film became one of the best films of the year, animated or otherwise!

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is now available to own on Blu-ray and DVD, so if you have somehow missed out on this film, or you somehow don't own it yet, (Yes, this review is quite late, it somehow ended up getting stuck in a "draft purgatory" for three months, but better late than never, right?) then let me tell you why this set is essential for Spider-Man fans.

The Film

There isn't much I can say about the film that you probably haven't heard yet, but let me give you a brief rundown of why I love it so much.

1. Obviously the visuals. This film is literally like nothing you've ever seen before. It is vibrantly colorful, strikingly bold, and every frame is like a comic work of art. You can't see me, but if you could, I'd do one of those chef's kisses. This film looks awesome, and I do not use that word lightly.

2. The animation. Second only to the visuals and definitely related to them, is the animation. This film is primarily CG animation, but the filmmakers have found a way to infuse a distinctly 2D, hand drawn feel into the animation. From mainly animating with 12 fps, rather than the standard 24, to literally hand drawing over some of the animation, to the fact that every character from the alternate universes is designed and animated completely differently, this film is a feast for the eyes for animation fans.

3. The story. We all know the story of Peter Parker. We love Peter Parker. I know lots of people are tired of the same story being told over and over, personally I don't mind, I love seeing how different filmmakers put their own spins on the same material, but even with my own love for the original Spider-Man, I loved seeing a brand new character step into the role. I had no prior knowledge of Miles Morales, or his backstory, so everything about this story was fresh for me. There were so many twists and turns, and so many surprises. Like I said, I love Peter Parker, but I don't go to a new Spider-Man film expecting to be shocked and surprised by the story, and the fact that this one was able to do that for me was the icing on an already amazing looking cake.

The Extras

Now that you've gotten an idea of how I feel about the film, let's get into the extras, because if you somehow haven't bought this set yet, this is what you really want to know about. What's in this set, and are they worth it?

Now, the extras I'm going off of here, are the ones on the digital copy. Sometimes what's on each disk can vary, but if you get the Blu-ray/DVD/Digital set, you should have everything I'm listing here.

Alternate Universe Mode

This is probably the biggest bonus feature of the entire set. This is a brand new version of the film that has had its deleted and alternate scenes fully re-integrated back into the film! Now this is not to say that this new version is the definitive canon version of the story now, the producers have said they'll be using some ideas from the deleted scenes in different ways in the next film, but this is still a fascinating look at what could have been an alternate universe version of the story.

Spider-Ham: Caught In a Ham

A hilarious short featuring Peter Porker, aka Spider-Ham, the Looney-Tunes-esque pig version of Spider-Man. This short feels like a cross between an episode of Spongebob Squarepants and an old Looney Tunes short, and it makes me wish it were an animated series of its own.

We Are Spider-Man

Great little featurette featuring interviews with the cast and crew, talking about what the different versions of Spider-Man mean to so many people.

Spider-Verse: A New Dimension

A featurette focusing on the art direction, style, and animation techniques used in the film to bring the world of Spider-Verse to life.

The Ultimate Comics Cast

Great documentary focusing on the cast of the film. Each major character gets a spotlight, with the crew talking about the casting process, and what each cast member brought to the film. I have always loved voice acting, so I loved this featurette. My one complaint was that they did not focus on Lily Tomlin, like at all. I know she wasn't in the film a lot, but she has a big enough role, that I thought she deserved at least a mention. Oh well. Even without her, this was one of my favorite extras.

Designing Cinematic Comics Characters

Two mini docs focusing on the design process for the characters. Heroes & Hams, focusing on the heroes, and Scorpions and Scoundrels, focusing on the villains.

A Tribute to Stan Lee & Steve Ditko

Just what it sounds like. A great look back at the legacy of the creators of Spider-Man. A really great featurette, and a welcome addition to the extras on one of Stan Lee's final films.

The Spider-Verse Super-Fan Easter Egg Challenge

I originally thought this was going to be a comprehensive walkthrough of everything hidden in the film, but apparently not! Phil Lord and Christopher Miller do walk us through plenty of Easter Eggs, most of which I would have never caught, but at the end they reveal that they have no idea of the number of actual Easter Eggs in the film, and they challenge fans to find them all! Apparently there are likely hundreds of them hidden all over the film!

Another, Another Times Square

Bouncing off the last featurette, this one focuses on just the Times Square sequences, looking at the many, many details hidden throughout the scenes.

How to Draw Miles Morales

Just what it sounds like.

How to Draw Spider-Gwen

Also just what it sounds like.

Meanwhile...In a Gassy Universe

Literally the worst bonus feature for any movie I've ever seen. This is just scenes from the movie with fart noises dubbed in. Who green-lit this garbage? Thankfully the amazing movie and the rest of the extras more than make up for this atrocious mess, and I can choose to never watch it again.

Lyric Videos

Two music videos featuring songs from the movie.

“Sunflower” by Post Malone and Swae Lee

“Familia” by Nicki Minaj & Anuel AA (feat. Bantu)

Final Thoughts

Get this film. This is one of the most amazing films I've seen in years, and even if you're not a superhero fan, if you love animation, you need to see this for the visuals alone. Thankfully this has so much more going for it than visuals, but just based on aesthetic alone, this film is mind-blowing.

Purchase
