Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a unique beast of a superhero movie. One that pushed the envelope of computer animation to levels never before seen, and to astounding success. For those clamouring for more, we are pleased to report that Sony Pictures Animation is bringing us back to the dazzling Spider-Verse with a sequel in 2022!

Sony Pictures announced last Friday (via Deadline) that a Spider-Verse sequel is in the works, and has been assigned a theatrical release on April 8, 2022. Plot and cast details for the sequel have yet to be announced, although Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are set to return as producers.

Miller helped spread the sequel’s announcement on his Twitter.

Released in December 2018, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse turned out to be a $90 million gamble with a bold payoff. The feature, centred on Miles Morales, gathered $375 million worldwide, with critics hailing it as a mindblowing milestone in both the medium of animation and the superhero genre. It would later earn the winning glory of seven Annie Awards and the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

The Spider-Verse sequel will be joining Sony Pictures’ current slate of Spider-Man-related movies, including Morbius and Venom 2 (both part of Sony’s Marvel Universe) in 2020, and the third standalone MCU Spider-Man film releasing in July 2021.

Another announcement Sony Animation made was that its upcoming musical Vivo has been given a five-month delay. Originally set for November 2020, the picture will now release on April 16, 2021.

Vivo was, at one point, an abandoned project of DreamWorks Animation before Sony revived it. The Carribean-themed musical follows a music-obsessed capuchin monkey who makes a dangerous journey from Havana, Cuba, to Miami, Florida, to achieve his dreams.

Vivo will feature songs written by Moana songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda. Screenwriting duties will be handled by Miranda’s collaborator on In the Heights Quiara Alegría Hudes, while Kirk De Micco of The Croods is directing the feature.

It was also revealed back in June that Wreck-It Ralph director Rich Moore (who recently moved from Disney Animation to Sony) had joined the Vivo crew as a producer.

Sony Pictures Animation’s current theatrical schedule is the following:

  • The Mitchells vs. the Machines – September 18, 2020
  • Wish Dragon – TBA, 2020
  • Vivo – April 16, 2021
  • Hotel Transylvania 4 – December 21, 2021
  • Untitled Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel – April 8, 2022

(Note: 2020’s Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway does not carry the Sony Pictures Animation banner despite their involvement with the first movie.)

Are you excited to return to the Spider-Verse? Does Vivo sound like something you’d be keen to check out?
