The Sony Pictures Animation film broke new records at the annual ceremony dedicated to the worst in cinema, winning all four of its main nominations. Writers Tony Leondis, Eric Siegel, and Mike White were awarded Worst Screenplay, Leondis earned an additional win for Worst Director, and the Worst Screen Combo award was given to “any two obnoxious emojis.” Finally, the notorious movie itself won the grand prize of Worst Picture, beating out other nominees like Baywatch, Fifty Shades Darker, The Mummy, and Transformers: The Last Knight.

This is indeed a historical achievement in the field of animation. Not only does it make The Emoji Movie the first animated feature to win those four awards, but it is also the most Razzies an animated feature has won. To add insult to injury, this was able to win Worst Picture, and yet not a single animated film has won the Oscar for Best Picture.

Prior to The Emoji Movie, only two animated features in history have won a Golden Raspberry Award. The first ever dates back to 1994’s Thumbelina, in which it won Worst Original Song for “Marry the Mole”. Twenty years later, Kelsey Grammer won Worst Supporting Actor for his voice work on Tin Man in Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return, alongside several other films he starred in during 2014.

It’s also worth noting that this was not the first time that Sony Pictures Animation was involved in the Razzies. Their 2013 live-action/CGI feature The Smurfs 2 was nominated for Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel but lost to Disney’s The Lone Ranger.

The Emoji Movie was also nominated a special Razzie titled “The Razzie Nominee So Rotten You Loved It”, in which it was nominated alongside the other four Worst Picture nominees. However, it was Baywatch that ended up winning that award.
