The road to Woody and Buzz’s fourth big adventure may be a rocky one for Pixar, but fear not. According to Deadline, production looks to be getting back on track, as Pixar has assigned up-and-coming writer Stephane Folsom to helm the much-delayed Toy Story 4.
Folsom is relatively new to the screenwriting business, as she made the Black List for her original screenplay of a project called 1969: A Space Odyssey or: How Kubrick Learned to Stop Worrying and Land on the Moon. She was also initially one of the writers for Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok but was denied credit by the Writers Guild of America.
Folsom is set to replace writing duo Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, who were originally working on Toy Story 4‘s script. The duo’s reasoning for departing was not because of the misconduct of Pixar chief John Lasseter (who stepped down from directing the film) as initially reported but rather due to creative and philosophical differences.
Toy Story 4 was originally visioned as a romantic comedy centered around Woody and Bo Peep. It is currently unknown if that premise will still be retained in Folsom’s new script.
Pixar movies with production issues tend to get a less-than-stellar reputation as we saw with Brave and The Good Dinosaur. Add in the fact that Toy Story 4 has a lot of live up to its legendary predecessors (even though I’m among the minority who disliked the third movie), and it might be possible that this fourth entry might end up with the same fate. It’s still too early to fully determine the outcome, but hopefully, Folsom could deliver a worthy fourth adventure with the toys and their new owner Bonnie.
Directed by Pixar storyboard artist Josh Cooley, Toy Story 4 is still aimed for a June 21, 2019 release, nine years after the third film.
Are you still keen to see Woody and friends once again, or do you think this sequel is unnecessary? Feel free to share your thoughts!
