Disney’s current live-action remake craze continues unabated.

Deadline has reported today that the studio has hired Peter Hedges (About a Boy, The Odd Life of Timothy Green) to pen a loose adaptation of the original Pinocchio story about a boy carved from wood who wishes to be a real child. His wish comes true, but his stretching of the truth makes his nose grow larger.

As is sometimes the case, this won’t be the only Pinocchio-based film being made in Hollywood right now. Guillermo Del Toro is planning (amongst his many projects) a stop-motion animated film that will serve as a darker retelling of that story. Del Toro will co-direct this film from a script he wrote with Matthew Robbins and as of right now, foreign financiers are said to be circling it.

Disney first brought Pinocchio to life in the classic 1940 animated film and since then, it has been remade several times, both in animation and in live-action. So if anything, the upcoming takes that are being developed by Disney and Del Toro will simply join a list of multiple adaptations of that particular story.

This is also yet another addition to the growing slate of live-action Disney remakes, the number of which now stands at eight.

Once again, in no particular order (including one sequel): The Jungle Book, Pete’s Dragon, Beauty and the Beast, a sequel to Alice in Wonderland, Dumbo, Mulan, Winnie the Pooh, and now Pinocchio.

What do you think? Which version of Pinocchio are you looking forward to (Disney or Guillermo Del Toro)?
