If you thought the Toy Story 4 teaser was the biggest trailer released on the internet today, think again.

Warner Bros. and The Pokémon Company have unleashed the first official full length trailer for next summer’s live-action/animated hybrid tentpole, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu.

Check out the insane trailer below and be prepared for some hilarious Mr. Mime jokes:

Eagle-eyed fans will instantly notice the sheer scale of the film, which feels like a lavish, expensive film that doesn’t hold back on its visuals. Dozens of Pokémon, including old favorites like Bulbasaur, Charizard, Jigglypuff and Psyduck share screen space with popular new monsters such as Emolga and Greninja. Pikachu, the lead character, translates rather well to CGI, looking fluffy and cuddly as ever. That is…until he speaks English in Ryan Reynolds’ voice. You be the judge of that.

Points for originality though, as this film seems to be a deviation from the Alvin and the Chipmunks/Smurfs style of kid-friendly, fish-out-of-water themed movies, opting instead for a dark, grungy, believable high-stakes adventure that seems set to appeal to the original 90s-era generation of Pokémon fans as well as cater to today’s tween Pokémon fan base.

Warner Bros. also treated us to the first official poster for the film, which features dozens of Easter eggs for Pokémon fans to pore over:

From Legendary Pictures and distributed by Warner Bros., Pokémon: Detective Pikachu tells the story of 21-year old Tim Goodman (Justice Smith) who teams up with a talking Pikachu (voiced by Ryan Reynolds) in order to solve the mystery of his father’s disappearance. Inspired by the Nintendo 3DS game of the same name, the film is directed by Rob Letterman (known for his work on Goosebumps and Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie).

‘Catch’ the film in theaters May 10, 2019, marking the first time since 2001 that a Pokémon film will receive a wide theatrical release.

What are your thoughts on Detective Pikachu? Is it super effective?
