Make way for Prince Ali! Disney just dropped its first look at the upcoming live-action Aladdin, debuting in theaters May 24, 2019. Take a look!
While the footage is definitely a teaser and doesn’t reveal a ton, we do get our first peeks at Agrabah, Iago, the Cave of Wonders, and even Aladdin himself.
Noticeably absent is an appearance by Will Smith as the Genie, who, in the teaser’s closing credits, is given top star billing for the film as the only cast member listed, in a way channeling Disney’s marketing in 2013 for “Johnny Depp in The Lone Ranger,” despite Armie Hammer playing the title role in that film. Not even Mena Massoud in the title role as Aladdin is listed.
The credits in the Aladdin teaser additionally confirm that Alan Menken will compose the film’s score, as he did with the 1992 animated classic. As previously announced, Guy Ritchie will direct with beloved songs by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman, and Tim Rice, as well as new songs by Alan Menken with The Greatest Showman songwriting duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
2019 will also see theatrical re-imaginings of Dumbo (March 29) directed by Tim Burton and The Lion King (July 19) directed by Jon Favreau.
What do you wish for in this ‘Aladdin’ re-imagining?
