(UPDATE: As it turns out, we all got the news wrong! Mariah Carey will play the Mayor of Gotham, not Commissioner Gordon. A new version of the story follows below).
Another week, another round of casting news for the second film in the LCU (LEGO Cinematic Universe).
Deadline broke the news today that Mariah Carey has joined the voice cast of the first LEGO Movie spinoff, now known by the official title of The LEGO Batman Movie. She will voice the character of the Mayor of Gotham. This particular character has been played by many actors in Batman media. Typically, this character doesn’t survive at the end (for obvious reasons) or is usually put in harm’s way. I doubt that this version of the mayor—residing over a LEGO version of Gotham—will be any different.
She joins Will Arnett as Batman (reprising his role from The LEGO Movie), Michael Cera as Robin, Zach Galifianakis as The Joker, Rosario Dawson as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, and Ralph Finnes as Alfred Pennyworth. This will be Mariah’s first voice role in feature animation, as she previously had a guest appearance on Disney Channel’s The Proud Family and voiced two different characters in two episodes of American Dad!
The film is directed by Chris McKay (animation supervisor on The LEGO Movie) from a screenplay by Seth Grahame-Smith and produced by Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Phil Lord, and Chris Miller.
The LEGO Batman Movie will hit theaters on February 10, 2017. LEGO Ninjago will follow on September 22, 2017. The LEGO Movie Sequel will bow on May 18, 2018. An untitled LCU film (possibly The Billion Brick Race) is set to launch on May 24, 2019.
What do you think? What are your thoughts on this casting choice?
