Given the success of Hotel Transylvania 2 (now one of the highest-grossing films for Sony Pictures Animation), this had to happen at some point. All we needed was the official confirmation, which we now have.

As first reported by Comingsoon.net, Sony officially announced that Hotel Transylvania 3 is a go.

The third film in the animated franchise will arrive in theaters on September 21, 2018. Hotel Transylvania 3 will have competition, as Warner Bros.’ untitled Scooby-Doo animated feature is also set to release that day.

While there is no solid confirmation at this point, the core cast members are expected to return. What’s not a sure thing is who will be in the director’s chair for the film, as Genndy Tartakovsky declared late last month he won’t return for the third installment.

As things stand, the Hotel Transylvania franchise remains a crucial part of Sony Pictures Animation as its biggest and most reliable property, especially since SPA’s current president Kristine Belson is hard at work on re-energizing the studio with a revamped film slate packed with potential franchise-starters. We don’t have any confirmation on when Sony Pictures Animation intends to search for directors, but it’s clear that whoever takes the job will have big shoes to fill.

Hotel Transylvania 2 is now in theaters and available for pre-order on Amazon. Read Morgan’s review of the film here and listen to the Animation Addicts review and discussion of the film here.

Do you have any thoughts on this development? Are you looking forward to Hotel Transylvania 3?
