Today, Disney’s Aladdin will make its Broadway debut. The new musical, based on the 1992 animated classic, is the latest in a long line of Disney Broadway plays adapted for the stage from popular movies (The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Mary Poppins to name a few). Also, Disney’s most recent smash, Frozen, is making its way to the stage in the near future.

To celebrate the debut of Aladdin, we at the Rotoscopers are taking a look at a few Disney Classics that fans would love to see on the stage. Disney, are you listening?

1. Mulan (1998)

Mulan would be perfect for the stage. The songs are modern yet theatrical, and the signature song “Reflection” would be a central moment in the show. Not to mention the giant set pieces, the heart-pounding action and the laugh-out loud jokes. Mulan is a perfect blend of drama and comedy, in short, a perfect match for Broadway. (Geddit? Match.)

2. Tangled (2010)

Another movie which would be amazing on Broadway would be Tangled. Disney’s 50th animated feature was a big hit, and Rapunzel is now a common part of pop culture. Combine that with the fun songs, the brilliant story and some magic special effects (can you imagine what the floating lantern scene would look like on stage?), and you have a winner!

3. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)

This movie was actually planned to be adapted by Disney, but hasn’t yet been formally announced. The opening number, “Bells of Notre Dame” would be sure to leave people wide-eyed (much like “Circle of Life” in The Lion King). Although the story is dark and gory, Disney shouldn’t “dumb” it down and make the most of the dark elements. If done right, this could be the next Les Miserables.

4. The Jungle Book (1967)

Another movie which is reportedly in the process of adaptation is the story of Mowgli. The colorful, lush setting would be a refreshing change. And who wouldn’t enjoy a vivid menagerie of furry characters? The Jungle Book transcends media; the book was enchanting and the Disney animated version just as charming. We can’t wait for this one!

19. The Jungle Book (1967)

5. Sleeping Beauty (1959)

This needs to happen. Enough said.

16. Sleeping Beauty (1959)

6. Pete’s Dragon (1977)

So we know there’s a live action/CGI movie possibly happening, but come on! The musical, whimsical story is a perfect fit for the stage and will melt hearts.

7. Hercules (1997)

Are we the only ones who want a Hercules Broadway adaptation? Because, in our opinion, it would be awesome!

35. Hercules (1997)

So those are our picks. What are yours?

Which Disney classics would YOU like to see adapted to the Broadway stage in the future?
