[REVIEW] ‘Thor: The Dark World’: A Worthy Heir to The Thor Throne

Disney has continued to experience success after success with each new release in its Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thor: The Dark World is no different. It has all the action, fun and humor you expect in a modern-day Marvel film, while continuing to build and enhance the Thor movie cannon.

Thor: The Dark world continues the story of the Thor, the Mighty Avenger, but instead of sharing screentime with his fellow Avengers, this story goes back to focusing entirely on him in all his hunky glory. When an ancient enemy, Malekith, reappears, Thor finds himself battling to not only save his home of Asgard, but also to save all the Nine Realms of the universe. When his love interest Jane gets infected with a unknown power, Thor must also take her to Asgard to help save her before it consumes her.

It had been years since I saw the first Thor film, but immediately I was brought back into this captivating world and realized why I always liked it so much. It’s one part Star Wars and one part Lord of the Rings, so watching Thor in his native home of Asgard is a delight. Natalie Portman is such a smart casting choice, so I’m glad to see her back again as the intelligent, witty, and love-stricken Jane. Her performance is so real and authentic and it’s interesting to see how this human reacts and adapts in the world of filled with Asgardians.

The entire time in the theatre, I was completely engrossed and captivated by the story. It took turns that I didn’t expect and when I finally thought we were reaching a conclusion to the film, it took another big turn, then another. The final scenes left the door open for a third Thor film, which left me beaming and eagerly anticipating the next installment. Also, with all Marvel films, be sure to stay for the entire duration of the credits because there’s a special scene that builds the future plot even further.

Thor: The Lost World is a fantastic sequel to the first Thor film because it not only adds to the Thor world, but it also stands on its own as a independent film. It makes you leave the theatre wanting to watch it again while eagerly anticipating the inevitable third film.
