Studio Ghibli has released an all new movie poster for the North American Release of its film From Up on Poppy Hill.
Originally released in 2011, From Up on Poppy Hill was one of the top grossing films that year and earned the Japan Academy Prize for Animation. As is common with most Studio Ghibli films, they typically don’t garner a wider international release and make it to the US until a few years after the Japan release.
Here is the plot synopsis via Coming Soon:
Set in Yokohama in 1963, the film centers on a high school couple’s innocent love and the secrets surrounding their births. The story takes place in a Japan that is picking itself up from the devastation of World War II and preparing to host the 1964 Olympics – and the mood is one of both optimism and conflict as the new generation struggles to embrace modernity and throw off the shackles of a troubled past. The film’s rich color palette and painterly detail capture the beauty of Yokohama’s harbor and its lush surrounding hillsides, while the 1960′s pop soundtrack evokes nostalgia for an era of innocence and hope.
The film will be the first distributed in North America by GKIDS. Disney was the prior North American distributor with The Secret World of Arrietty being the last Ghibli film distributed by Disney. The English voice cast includes Gillian Anderson, Beau Bridges, Jamie Lee Curtis, Bruce Dern, Jeff Dunham, Isabelle Fuhrman, Christina Hendricks, Ron Howard, Chris Noth, Emily Osment, Aubrey Plaza, Charlie Saxton and Alex Wolff.
From Up on Poppy Hill will have a limited released in LA and New York on March 15, 2013, which will then be followed by a wider release on March 29. There is no confirmed UK released date for the film. View the trailer here.
