USA Today has shared a sneak peek preview of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 55th Animated Feature, Zootopia!
The film, due in theatres March 2016, is an anthropomorphic take on classic crime capers. As we’ve already shared before, the film features an unlikely pair, a fast-talking, wily fox named Nick Wilde (voiced by Jason Bateman) and a sweet, good-natured but no-nonsense rookie bunny cop named Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin). Not only do these reluctant allies have opposing personalities, but they are clearly natural enemies (fox vs. rabbit, anyone?). Of course, while they do not get along at first, eventually they must rely on each other. Nick needs Judy to get him out of a sticky situation, while Judy takes the help of Nick to crack a serious case.
Here is (finally) our first official look at the lead characters:
The film is being directed by Rich Moore (Wreck-It Ralph) and Byron Howard (Tangled). The casting decisions for Bateman and Goodwin were made when the directors realized that they fit their characters like a glove. According to Rich Moore, Bateman brought a wily, self-centered swagger to the character of Nick, in addition to a certain humor and heart. Goodwin, too, is perfect as Judy because she can deliver sweetness, heart and great humor to the animated bunny. At the same time, Moore calls Judy a “little Pollyanna mixed with Furiosa” (Furiosa being the fiery character from Mad Max: Fury Road). We’re excited to see a bunny with attitude!
The directors also shared details on the animated metropolis called “Zootopia”, where all the animals live in harmony. It is made up of every environment imaginable, from Tundratown and Sahara Square, to rural Bunny Burrows, Judy’s home.
Finally, the animals share characteristics of their real-life counterparts. Judy is twitchy, hyperactive and a little meek, while Nick is sly and quick. There will, of course, be a whole zoo of animals in the film and we can’t wait to see this brand new world.
Zootopia opens in theatres on March 4, 2016.
