Cartoon Network announced a brand new Powerpuff Girls reboot, which is slated to premiere next year.
These newly released images give us a first look at the (slightly) redesigned characters, which are strikingly similar to their original designs. Perhaps audiences weren’t too pleased with last year’s reboot attempt, in which the characters had a totally radical new design. The new series is expected to follow the classic look and feel of the original series. It is unclear if villains like Mojo Jojo or Him will return, or if the show will feature all new villains.
Cartoon Network has also announced the main voice cast for the upcoming show. While the original voice cast won’t return, the new cast will feature Amanda Leighton as Blossom, Kristen Li as Bubbles and Natalie Palamides as Buttercup. The role of the Narrator and Mayor will be reprised by Tom Kenny. The show is executive produced by Emmy-winner Nick Jennings (Adventure Time), with Bob Boyle (Wow! Wow! Wubzy!) as co-executive producer.
Cartoon Network Chief Creative Officer Rob Sorcher commented:
“It has been wonderful to see this new show team bring such passion and positive creative spirit to this iconic property. We know that fans of every age will appreciate this new take on saving the world before bedtime.”
The original Powerpuff Girls series premiered on Cartoon Network in 1996 and went on to become one of its most popular and beloved shows. It won two Emmy Awards during its 78-episode run and also spawned a successful theatrical animated film in 2002 (apart from two short-lived television reboots: Powerpuff Girls Z and last year’s TV special).
The Powerpuff Girls premieres in 2016 on Cartoon Network. Add it to your list of TV reboots, along with an all-new Ben 10, The Lion Guard, and Tangled.
