[FROZEMBER] ‘Frozen’ Voice Cast If It Were Made During Walt’s Era

In my previous post, I mentioned how a film adaptation of The Snow Queen was never able to be brought to fruition in Walt Disney’s time. Another attempt was made during the 1990s (in the era known as the Disney Renaissance) which also failed. But what if it had succeeded? What would the voice cast of Frozen have looked like had it been made during the Disney Renaissance, a period where celebrity voice actors were all the rage? Here are my thoughts.

ANNA: WINONA RYDER

An icon of the 1990s, it would make perfect sense for Disney to cast her as one of the female protagonists. I feel Anna would have been the better fit for her.

ELSA: MEG RYAN

Another icon of the 1990s especially in the rom-com genre, playing a princess/queen would be the next logical step for Meg Ryan. But would she sing her own songs or would Liz Callaway sing them like she did in Anastasia? We will never know.

KRISTOFF: TOM CRUISE

The boyish charm of Tom Cruise in the 1990s would definitely translate well in the character of Kristoff, even if by voice alone. I also think Cruise would have provided us with a believable romance between him and Winona Ryder’s Anna..

HANS: JOHNNY DEPP

We know that voice of his would definitely suit well for both the singing as well as the scheming nature of Hans!

OLAF: JIM CARREY

Being a comedian, Jim Carrey would provide the necessary comic relief that Olaf requires as well as give the character its own personality (which we would never be able to distinguish from Jim Carrey himself!)

DUKE OF WESELTON: STEVE BUSCEMI

Come on, tell me you can’t hear Steve Buscemi’s voice as an outraged and insulted Duke of Weselton! Tell me!

OAKEN: ROBIN WILLIAMS

While only a cameo role, we all know the brilliant improvisation and voices that Robin Williams would bring to the Scandinavian sauna owner, Oaken! The script writers wouldn’t need to write anything at all for Robin Williams and just let him do his thing. And depending on when this film would be made, this would either prepare Robin Williams for his forthcoming role as the Genie or he would have already had voicework experience as the Genie.

SVEN: FRANK WELKER

Once again, Sven wouldn’t speak, but his animal noises would be provided by the king of animal noises of the time (and probably still), the voice actor, Frank Welker himself. The Genie and Abu will be reunited!

GRAND PABBIE (THE TROLL KING): JEREMY IRONS

I’m getting all the Disney Renaissance voice actors in this, huh? But I do feel Jeremy Irons’ delicious voice would sound incredibly regal as the troll king himself.

KING OF ARENDELLE: MICHAEL DOUGLAS

It surprises me that Michael Douglas’ distinctive voice has never been utilized in a feature-length animated film before. So why not start him off with the King of Arendelle? His voice could provide the reassurance and discipline of a father needed for the brief role.

QUEEN OF ARENDELLE: ROBIN WRIGHT

She was the Princess Bride after all, I mean, Queen is the next logical step! We could even sneak in an “As You Wish” as a wink to the audience somewhere in her lines. I feel “Farmboy!” wouldn’t fit anywhere in her character though.

What do you think of my voice cast choices? If you disagree with some, whom would you have cast instead? Let us know in the comments below!
