With the holidays in full swing and Christmas Day less than a week away, it’s a perfect time for Disney to debut a teaser trailer for next year’s big live-action holiday feature film, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. The film will open in theaters on November 2, 2018.
Lasse Hallström is directing the film, inspired by the classic tale of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E. T. A. Hoffmann. The film stars Mackenzie Foy as Clara, the young girl who happens upon a mysterious world while she’s searching for a key to unlock a precious gift from her late mother. Keira Knightley stars as The Sugar Plum Fairy, while Helen Mirren plays the villainous Mother Ginger. Morgan Freeman also makes an appearance as Clara’s godfather Drosselmeyer.
The tale begins at her godfather’s annual holiday party, where Clara is presented with a golden thread that leads to the key she seeks to open her mother’s gift. However, the string leads her not directly to a key, but rather into a whole new, parallel world. Hence the film’s title, this world consists of four realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers, Land of Sweets, and a foreboding fourth realm where Mother Ginger rules. Clara, along with soldier Phillip (played by Jayden Fowora-Knight) must journey to Mother Ginger’s fourth realm to retrieve Clara’s key and restore harmony to this parallel world.
