Holy time warp, Batman! Afro Samurai creator Takashi Okazaki and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure producer Jumpei Mizusaki have partnered with Warner Bros. Home Entertainment to bring Ninja Batman, a radical re-imagining of the Dark Knight in feudal Japan.

Inexplicably brought to the Middle Ages, Batman must once again stop his nemesis The Joker, Devil King of the 6th Heaven. Along for the ride are all of the usual suspects of Gotham City, including Catwoman, Robin, Alfred, and Harley Quinn among others. The anime style makeover of the characters gives a gritty, realistic, and unique quality to some stunning visuals and what looks to be some action-packed battle scenes.

The film will get a theatrical release in Japan next year with a presumed direct-to-video release here in the U.S. at an as-of-yet unreleased date. The voice cast includes Koichi Yamadera as Batman, Wataru Takagi as Joker, Ai Kakuma as Catwoman, and Rie Kugimiya as Harley Quinn. Check out the trailer below:

What do you think of this new take on the Caped Crusader? Sound off in the comments below!

Note: American outlets have been calling the film Batman Ninja, with the proper Japanese title translating to Ninja Batman for purposes of this article.
