DreamWorks Animation is teaming up with Blumhouse Productions to produce a family-friendly, scary animated feature tentatively titled Spooky Jack. Blumhouse Productions is best known for low-budget horror films such as the Paranormal Activity series and The Purge; Spooky Jack will be the studio’s first venture into animated territory.
What we know at this early stage is that the film will follow three siblings who move into a new house. Here they discover that the make-believe monsters everyone tells children aren’t real, actually are. And they’re as afraid of humans as humans are of them.
Some of the possible creatures we’ll be seeing include the classic monster under the bed, leprechauns, Bigfoot, the Boogeyman and the Chupacabra. DreamWorks Feature Animation Group president Chris deFaria teased that the film will include creatures from folklore stories across he globe.
Damon Ross of DreamWorks Animation is set to produce the film, with Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions as executive producer. Robert Ben Garant, known for the first two Night at the Museum screenplays, is set to write the script based on his original idea. Interestingly enough, Blumhouse Productions initially intended for the film to be a live-action production, but it never quite took off. DeFaria had been looking to create a scary, yet family-friendly movie ever since his work on Warner Bros.’ Corpse Bride in 2005, so when he reached out to Blum, it was a perfect match.
There is no word yet on a release date, but hopefully we’ll be hearing more soon about what promises to be a touching, dark, and comedic animated tale.
