The 2015 Phoenix Film Festival has a lot to offer movie fans: everything from screenings of dramas and documentaries to animated shorts. But, one of the highlights of this year’s festival will be Kids’ Day, a family-friendly event held on Saturday, March 28. The best part? It’s free!

Kids’ Days Events

Kids’ Day is a fun event where kids of all ages can enjoy the Phoenix Film Festival with their families. There will be a variety of hands-on activity stations focused on the different aspects of film production.

Here are just a few of the stations at this year’s Kids’ Day:

  • Walk the red carpet and get a paparazzi photo taken (courtesy of Bookman’s).
  • Mr. Jesse, from the Phoenix Public Library, is back to read stories, talk about books that have been made into movies, and have fun with the younger festival fans.
  • Write the next best-selling screenplay “Mad Lib” style.
  • Test out your acting chops against a green screen.
  • Older kids will create their own short film!

$5 Screening of Disneynature’s Monkey Kingdom

But that’s not all! As part of Kids’ Day, there will be a special early screening of the new Disneynature film Monkey Kingdom, which swings into theaters April 17. This screening will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:40 p.m. After a great day of activities and fun, families can sit back with some popcorn and candy to watch this remarkable, real-life story about monkeys living in South Asia.

Monkey Kingdom synopsis:

Life is an adventure for Maya, the clever and resourceful blonde-bobbed monkey in ‘Monkey Kingdom,’ Disneynature’s new film set among ancient ruins in the storied jungles of South Asia. Maya’s world is forever changed when she welcomes son Kip into her complicated extended family. Like all families, Maya’s has more than its share of colorful personalities—and she’s determined to give her son a leg up in the world. When their longtime home at Castle Rock is taken over by powerful neighboring monkeys, Maya’s family relocates, and she uses her street smarts and ingenuity to lead them to untapped resources amidst strange new creatures and unsettling surroundings. Ultimately, they will have to work together to reclaim Castle Rock, where Maya can hopefully realize her dreams for her son’s future. Directed by Mark Linfield (“Chimpanzee,” “Earth”) and co-directed by Alastair Fothergill (“Chimpanzee,” “Bears”) with music from award-winning composer Harry Gregson-Williams, “Monkey Kingdom” swings into theaters April 17, 2015.

The Phoenix Film Festival runs March 26 through April 2 at the Harkins Scottsdale 101 (7000 E Mayo Blvd, Phoenix, AZ 85054). Tickets to Monkey Kingdom are just $5 and can be purchased here.
