One of the unfortunate results of the lame Disney sequels of the ’90s is they created a stink upon anything that is direct to DVD or not given a wide release. Sometimes this reputation is deserved, especially in films that are cheap copies of wide releases, but not always. Starting in 2001, Mattel bucked this trend by releasing a series of Barbie films that are surprisingly entertaining. The animation isn’t always the best, but they are well made in every other area and a lot of fun to watch.

This weekend for our Indie-Mation Club, we are taking a look at the second Barbie movie Barbie as Rapunzel. We will save the first release, Barbie in the Nutcracker for Christmas. Barbie as Rapunzel is an engaging fairytale film that starts with Barbie (Kelly Sheridan) telling the story of Rapunzel to Kelly. Anjelica Huston does a great job voicing Mother Gothel and the music is performed by the London Symphony Orchestra.

We will look forward to talking about Barbie as Rapunzel on Monday. In the meantime, give it a watch. It just may surprise you!
