Coming from the studio that brought us the recent successes of Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen and Big Hero 6, it’s no wonder that Disney’s newest animated film Zootopia has been such a success, becoming one of only two 2016 films to make over $1 billion at the box office. Not only is the film great and worth watching again and again, the Blu-ray is equally compelling as it’s packed with fantastic bonus features.

Bonus Features ✮✮✮✮

This Blu-ray release has so many bonus features, that you might not be able to get through them all in one sitting.

  • Zoology: The Roundtables – This bonus feature, hosted by Judy Hopps’ voice actress Ginnifer Goodwin, gives us an in-depth look at the movie’s characters, animation, environments and more. It’s a fantastic behind-the-scenes look at all the creativity and talent that went into creating the unique feel of the city of Zootopia.
  • The Origin of an Animal Tale – Like many films, Zootopia went through many story iterations before landing on the final product. In this feature-length bonus feature, we get an inside look at the story’s development from beginning to final film. It definitely is a must watch for any Disney fan!
  • Research: A True-Life Adventure – In this featurette, we get to see the various worldwide destinations that the filmmakers visited to better understand the animal kingdom and how to they applied those lessons to the film.
  • Z.P.D. Forensic Files – Easter eggs, once something that filmmakers would sneak into their film not talk much about, now have hatched into something much bigger. Now studios actively look for opportunities to put as many secret nuggets into their films as possible and now, they even make bonus features about them! This featurette talks about just a few of the many Easter eggs found in Zootopia. Can you find others not listed?
  • Scoretopia – Academy Award®-winning composer, Michael Giacchino spotlights five of cinema’s greatest percussionists and how they brought an organic, animalistic sound to his powerful and emotional music score.
  • Deleted Characters – There are always too many fun characters concieved during pre-production that don’t make the final version of the film. In this bonus feature, directors Byron Howard and Rich Moore introduce these forgotten citizens of Zootopia.
  • Deleted Scenes – Since the narrative of the story changed during production, we are treated with seven deleted scenes, introduced by the directors directors Byron Howard and Rich Moore.
  • “Try Everything” Music Video by Shakira – A music video by Shakira, who voices Gazelle in the film and performs this song during the film’s credits.

Final Thoughts

Zootopia is a superb film that was a worldwide success. Not only is the Blu-ray worth owning for that reason alone, but the bonus features that accompany this release are world-class as well.
