Sony is bringing Ghostbusters back in a big way, and we don’t just know this because there’s a new movie coming out this summer. It’s no secret that the studio has been developing plans for a cinematic universe based on the classic property. Last October, we learned that one of those plans would include an animated Ghostbusters movie that would be developed separately from the live-action films. Now, we know that the film is actually happening. Why? Because they just found a director.
The Hollywood Reporter recently broke the news this week that rising-star animator Fletcher Moules has been tapped to direct the animated film for Sony Pictures Animation, Montecito, and Ghost Corps.
You may not be familiar with Fletcher, but you have probably seen his work on TV and smartphone screens (many, many times). Recently, he’s directed a popular string of animated commercials for the Clash of Clans mobile game. One spot in particular, titled “Ride of the Hog Riders”, has become a viral smash hit on Youtube with over 90 million views. You can watch it down here:
Ivan Reitman, a core architect of the Ghostbusters franchise, will produce with Tom Pollock under their Montecito banner. Kristen Belson and Ali Bell will oversee for Sony Pictures Animation.
With the first (and most important) piece in place for the project, the studio appears to be moving forward with the project in earnest. It might be a while before it even gets a release date, as SPA’s current slate of movies is dated up to 2018. Depending on how well the all-female reboot goes, I wouldn’t rule out the chances of this movie being put near the top of their priority list.
What do you think? Any thoughts on the news? Based on what you’ve seen in the Clash of Clans ad, do you think SPA made the right choice for the animated Ghostbusters movie?
