These days, Alan Tudyk is to Disney Animation what John Ratzenberger is to Pixar. Disney first cast Tudyk as King Candy in 2012’s Wreck-It Ralph, and continued with every film since. Now it’s looking like his presence in Disney films will become perennial tradition as news surfaces for the studio’s upcoming releases.
Collider interviewed Tudyk at Comic-Con while he promoted his new webshow Con Man. During the interview, Tudyk’s increasing Disney involvement was mentioned, revealing an exciting discovery.
“Have they approached you for ‘Moana’ or ‘Zootopia’?”
“I don’t know that I can say. It’s always a question if you can say that. So I guess that’s saying it by not saying it, right?“
This all but confirms Alan Tudyk is Disney’s “lucky charm,” a mandatory part of every film for Walt Disney Animation Studios.
King Candy was Tudyk’s most prominent Disney role thus far, being the film’s primary antagonist, enjoying plenty of screentime, and becoming beloved by fans for an impressive performance emulating Disney Legend Ed Wynn, the voice of Mad Hatter in 1951’s Alice in Wonderland (among many other Disney credits). In 2013, Tudyk played the Duke of Weselton in Frozen, and followed in 2014 with Alistair Krei in Big Hero 6, both of which Collider notes were red herrings, characters the audience is misled into believing to be the villain.
It is unknown at this time what capacity Tudyk’s roles will have in Zootopia (releasing March 2016) and Moana (November 2016). It is likely more information could be revealed at the D23 Expo next month, where Disney and Pixar will hold a special presentation with sneak peeks at the studios’ entire release calendar.
