Ever since the first official unveiling of footage from DreamWorks Dragons: Race to the Edge at this year’s WonderCon, fans have wanted to get their hands on some of that footage themselves and the deluge of interviews and details have only whetted their appetites.
So, with this in mind, I’m glad to be able to say that fans’ wishes have come true.
Just yesterday, Berk’s Grapevine unveiled the first ever clip from Race to the Edge (provided as an exclusive).
See the clip below:
Right off the bat, one can tell the move to Netflix benefited the show greatly in terms of animation. Everything from the lighting, details, effects, and even the way the camera is placed at times are definite signifiers of the more cinematic, older-skewing tone for Race to the Edge (a goal stated repeatedly by its showrunners).
We also get to see a more dynamic interplay and partnership between Hiccup and Toothless. True to the showrunners’ word, they act very much as a unit.
As for the clip itself, there are at least three major things to note. First, Hiccup and Toothless find the Dragon Eye on what looks to be the (booby trapped) remains of a ship. This raises even more questions about where the ship (and the Dragon Eye) originated.
Second, Hiccup directly mentions Dagur in relation to the Dragon Eye. In the article on the Berk’s Grapevine interview earlier today, executive producers Art Brown and Douglas Sloan outright confirmed that we will see Dagur in the first episode of Race to the Edge and that he will play a big role throughout the season. Combined with the fact that this clip appears to be taken from the first episode (in which the Dragon Eye is discovered for the first time), it’s a safe bet that Dagur will be one of the first threats the characters will come across in their journeys outside Berk.
Third, Hiccup kept his shield from Riders/Defenders. Apart from this being a nice continuity touch, it will be cool to see how he may have tricked out the shield in the years that follow the end of Defenders of Berk.
This obviously won’t be the last clip we’ll see from Race to the Edge, so we’ll keep you updated on future clips and other updates that come in the following weeks.
What do you think? Do you have any thoughts on this new clip? Does this make you excited for Race to the Edge?
