Pitch Perfect is one of those perfect storm films that come out of nowhere and become a surprise success. So it’s no wonder that the a sequel got ordered. But the big question is: does Pitch Perfect 2 prove that the first film was a one-hit wonder? Or will it go multi-platinum?

Pitch Perfect 2 follows the the Barden Bellas, an all-female a capella group of misfits who rose to the top in the university a capella scene. But after an unfortunate incident at a performance before the President for his birthday, the three-time national champions get banned from performing in the US a capella circuit. In order to regain their standing, they must enter into the world a capella competition and win first place, a feat which no American team has every accomplished.

All of the Bellas are seniors and, as part of the suspension, are unable to hold auditions for new members. The team adds a new “legacy” member, Emily, who is allowed membership because her mother was a former Barden Bella. As the team prepares their set for Worlds, Beca (Anna Kendrick) finds herself spread too thin and unable to fully commit to the team due to her secret internship at a production company, which she hopes to use to further her career and becoming a music producer.

Pitch Perfect 2 is a hilarious movie, but has the tendency to go overboard with the familiar. The diverse set of characters from the first film are back–some for good, some for worse. Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson), of course, steals the show with every line that comes from her mouth. Beca is the star and someone you root for and love. While other characters such as Lilly (Hana Mae Lee) feel overdone and worn out.

The plot is, more or less, that of the first film: the team works their way to the top to win the big championship. Nonetheless, there are enough sub-plots and great songs to keep you interested. A particular favorite was an underground a capella face-off between various international teams. Get ready to belly laugh the entire time.

Overall, I loved Pitch Perfect 2. At times it’s zany and over-the-top ridiculous, but you’ll be laughing the entire time. Seeing the Bellas back at it is like playing an old favorite record and discovering a whole new set of songs on the other side.
