Even through we won’t experience Hiccup and Toothless’ final leg of their cinematic journey until 2018, fans of the How to Train Your Dragon franchise still have plenty to look forward to in the meantime (especially in regards to the small screen).
Thanks to a few sources, we have new details on the upcoming third season of DreamWorks Dragons. These new details includes the name of the new season, give us our first look, and inform us when we might see some new footage (it will be quite soon).
First, the title of the season. Whereas the first two seasons went by the subtitles of Riders of Berk and Defenders of Berk, the third season will be titled DreamWorks Dragons: Race to the Edge!
Now, how do we know this is going to be the actual title?
We know because we have this:
This image is from page 65 of this year’s Annie Awards’ program book. Unless DreamWorks tells us otherwise, this is most definitely the title of the third season.
Plot-wise, Race to the Edge could mean any number of things. Since we know that Hiccup and Toothless began exploring lands beyond Berk in the five years between the first and second How to Train Your Dragon films, this season could possibly cover the beginning of those travels.
Next, we get our first look at the new season. Courtesy of WorldScreen.com, we have our first look at Race to the Edge. Notice that Hiccup is wearing a red variant of his green shirt and a pre-HTTYD2 ‘beta’ version of his flight suit:
Again, this image doesn’t tell us much about the plot itself, although it does give us a better look at the teenage versions of two of our main characters (they are both 17/18 years old when Race to the Edge begins).
Finally, we have have confirmation on when we’ll get our first look at footage from the upcoming season. For any of our readers attending WonderCon this weekend, DreamWorks will hold a panel during the convention that will host an exclusive first look at footage and new details for Race to the Edge!
The panel will be held on Sunday at 10:30 AM in Room 300AB. Special gifts will be handed out to the first 100 attendees.
Unfortunately, none of us at Rotoscopers HQ will attend the convention, but we’ll keep you posted on any news or updates that come from this panel.
The first two seasons of DreamWorks Dragons are now available on DVD (Part 1/Part 2 of Riders of Berk and Part 1/Part 2 of Defenders of Berk) and all digital platforms.
DreamWorks Dragons: Race to the Edge will premiere on Netflix sometime this year.
What do you think? Any thoughts on the new season’s title or the first released image? If you’re are going to WonderCon, do you plan to attend the HTTYD panel?
