Fourth ‘LEGO Movie’ Spinoff ‘The Billion Brick Race’ in Development at Warner Bros.

Warner Bros.’ newly-minted LCU (Lego Cinematic Universe), which now consists of multiple directors and writers presiding over other characters in different parts of that universe, has now grown even larger.

Multiple sources have reported this week that the studio has hired Jason Segal and Drew Pearce to write and co-direct a new LEGO spinoff, which bears the title of The Billion Brick Race.

This will be the fourth LEGO film to be put into production, joining LEGO Ninjago, LEGO Batman, and The LEGO Movie 2. Writer/director team Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and producers Dan Lin and Roy Lee will produce the film, while Courteney Valenti will oversee for Warner Bros.

While plot details are kept under wraps, the film is based on an original idea that Drew Pearce brought to the studio’s attention. The film will serve as the directorial debut for both Segal and Pearce.

Segal is best known for his lead role in Disney’s The Muppets and previously voiced a character in the first Despicable Me. He also has experience as a screenwriter, having also written The Muppets and comedies like Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek and The Five-Year Engagement.

Pearce is well-versed in tentpole franchises, having written Iron Man 3, this year’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, and the upcoming third installment in Warner Bros.’ Sherlock Holmes film franchise. He will also be writing a male-casted Ghostbusters movie for Sony.

Again, plot details remain secret, so The Billion Brick Race can be interpreted a number of ways. What will it be about? What genre will it be? How will it fit into the larger framework of the LCU? These are questions that will eventually be answered down the road. For now, what can be said about this film is that they’ve assembled quite the talent to lead the film. Should their talents mix well, we should be in for an entertaining, blockbuster ride.

The film is in an early stage of development and has no set release date. It’s possible that this could be the untitled LCU film set for May 24, 2019, but it won’t be listed here as such until we are absolutely sure.

LEGO Ninjago will hit theaters on September 23, 2016. LEGO Batman follows sometime in 2017. The LEGO Movie Sequel will be in theaters sometime in 2018, an untitled LCU film is set to follow on May 24, 2019, and The Billion Brick Race is in development for an unknown release date.
