Following the surprising success of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, another animated TV property is heading to the big screen.

Deadline recently reported that a feature-length adaptation of the mega-popular Cartoon Network series Adventure Time has been greenlit for development.

Produced by The LEGO Movie‘s Chris McKay and Roy Lee, the project will be developed in collaboration with Cartoon Network Studios. Series creator Pendleton Ward will also be producing the film and will have some level of involvement with the screenplay. Jon Berg and Cate Adams will oversee the project for Warner Bros.

With this news, Warner Animation Group adds to a growing slate of animated features, many of which are also based on TV properties (The Jetsons, Scooby-Doo, The Flintstones, etc).

Known for its brand of older-skewing, absurdist humor and storylines, Adventure Time premiered back in April of 2010 and has since become Cartoon Network’s leading property, amassing a giant fan following and inspiring a number of other TV shows with a similar style and tone.

How a feature adaptation of the hit animated series will be received among a wider, broader audience remains to be seen. Paramount Animation surprised everyone when Nickelodeon’s oldest and most iconic property pulled off a critical and commercial home-run nearly a decade and a half after its first film, so there’s a good chance that a more recent property can do just as well.

It’s currently not known at this time if the film will retain the show’s 2D-animated style or make a wholesale leap into CG.

What do you think? How do you feel about getting a feature-length Adventure Time film?
