While DWA gives Kung Fu Panda 3 a leg-up with co-director Alessandro Carloni joining Jennifer Yuh Nelson, another high-profile project from the studio has completely given its director’s chair to someone else.
Deadline recently reported that Rob Letterman, who was previously set to direct the upcoming adaptation of Captain Underpants, has exited the project. Following Rob’s departure, DWA is now in talks with David Soren (Turbo) as a potential replacement.
Scripted by Nicholas Stoller, the film is based on the popular series of children’s books of the same name, in which two mischievous kids hypnotize and transform their school principal into their comic-book creation: Captain Underpants.
While it didn’t exactly light up the box office, Turbo was an unusual concept for an animated feature that worked more than it didn’t. With that in mind, DWA might have seen David Soren a better fit for Captain Underpants, a series that’s best known for its unabashedly childish and anarchic brand of humor.
The cast includes Ed Helms (Mr.Krupp/Captain Underpants), Kevin Hart (George Beard), Thomas Middleditch (Harold Hutchins), Nick Kroll (Professor Poopypants), and Jordan Peele (Melvin).
Captain Underpants will fly into theaters on March 10, 2017.
What do you think? Any thoughts on the switch-up? Are you familiar with the books?
