Talk about a real comeback! Warner Bros. has scored their first big hit in feature animation since 2006’s Happy Feet and the film in question has proven this past weekend that it’s here to stay, if the film’s outstanding critical reception already didn’t. The Lego Movie beat out the competition over President’s Day weekend and stayed in the #1 spot, grossing a fantastic (estimated) $50 million over the three-day weekend and dipping just 27% from last weekend. Today, it took in another $13 million. It has broken the record for biggest President’s Day weekend haul at the box office! (Yeah, people sure are getting tired of animation, aren’t they?)

It’s now on track to gross over $200 million domestically, already making this year a great one for animation. Frozen also continued to dominate, as it only dropped 14% from last weekend, and it is still in the top 10! (It’s now at #8.) Add in the President’s Day gross of nearly $2 million and it actually increased a bit from last weekend. Talk about staying power! The film continues its long trek to the $1 billion mark worldwide, and it might even crack $400 million domestically. No need to ask “Will it make it to a billion?” It opens in Japan next month and it’s currently sitting at $957 million.

The Nut Job saw a bigger drop this weekend and it’s out of the Top 10, but it’s on track to gross more than $60 million here, beating out similar small-scale fare like Escape from Planet Earth and Free Birds. The $42 million film should turn a profit worldwide very soon.

How much do you think ‘The Lego Movie’ will make in the end? Will it continue to hang on at the domestic box office? When do you think Warner Bros. will announce their future animated feature projects? Sound off below!
