Archie and the gang are making an animated comeback!
A new TV series will relaunch ever-popular comic characters, Archie, Betty, Veronica and the rest of the Riverdale gang. Titled It’s Archie, the 2D animated series will feature the gang as rambunctious preteens in a contemporary Riverdale.
The new series, jointly produced by Moonscoop and Archie Comics, will bring the characters to the digital age, as they enjoy texting, posting online and watching videos, and of course hanging out at Pop’s Choc’lit Shoppe- all in sleek, stylized 2D animation. Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead and Reggie will retain their original personalities, while having loopy capers involving mad scientists, aliens in the janitor’s closet, pirates, lake monsters and more. The 12-year olds will study at Riverdale Junior High, and will also struggle with everyday issues like peer pressure, boy vs. girl competition, pie eating contests, chores and homework.
Personally, I think it’s great that the Riverdale gang are making a cool comeback. It’s Archie looks ready to compete with current Disney Channel animated hits like Phineas and Ferb and Gravity Falls. Of course, in a crowded TV scene, it’s important to stand out- something It’s Archie seems to be able to pull off with it’s wacky designs and style. (Although I do wish the alterations to the characters weren’t that radical).
This news comes right on the heels of the announcement that another popular Archie Comics character, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, is getting a reboot in the form of a new CGI animated series, Sabrina: Secrets Of A Teenage Witch, which debuts Fall 2013.
It’s Archie is currently slated for a late 2013 debut, although the network is yet to be announced.
What are your thoughts on Archie and the gang’s return to animation? Yay or nay?
