Miyazaki-Studio-Ghibli-Mitsubishi-A6M-ZeroStudio Ghibli news is few and far between nowadays, but today the Japanese animation studio finally released the first official footage from its newest film The Wind Rises.

The 30-second trailer is really more of a tease with no dialogue (making it easy to understand for non-Japanese speakers) and simpe Italian-sounding music. The Wind Rises tells the story of  Jiro Horikoshi, the engineer and creator of the iconic Mitsubishi A6M Zero Japanese WWII fighter plan. Presumably, the boy in the trailer is a young Horikoshi, as we see him starting his airplane and gracefully floating into the sky.

While set in WWII, the film won’t focus on the war, but rather on Horikoshi and his love for airplanes and his dream of building his own one day. However, since the plane was prominently used in Japanese warfare at the time (most notably in the attack on Pearl Harbor), there will be a few scenes from the war. I reckon the overall tone of the film will be quaint and peaceful, much like this trailer.

This first trailer and footage comes just one month before the film’s official Japanese release date. So, Disney and other animation fans should be happy that we were able to get trailers for movies like Frozen at least six months before their release date…instead of one month.

The Wind Rises hits Japanese cinemas on July 20, 2013. No word on when the film will be released in the US.

Watch the trailer below. What are your thoughts? Are you excited to see The Wind Rises?
