‘Sleeping Beauty’ Diamond Edition Confirmed for Fall 2014

Disney Consumer Products has announced that Walt Disney’s ultimate fairytale, 1959’s animated classic Sleeping Beauty will be released on Diamond Edition Blu-ray in Fall 2014.

Disney Consumer Products released the following statement:

In fall 2014, a few months after the theatrical release of Maleficent, Walt Disney Studios will open its prestigious vault for the release of Sleeping Beauty Diamond Edition on Blu-ray. DCP will support the re-release of this timeless classic with a wide product assortment, which will also be supported through television promotions, short form content, marketing, PR and social media.

This comes as an interesting development. It was widely assumed that Aladdin would be Fall 2014’s Diamond Edition title. However, it looks like Sleeping Beauty has now taken its place in order to benefit from July 2014’s Sleeping Beauty spin-off, Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie.

Of note is the fact that this will not be the first time Sleeping Beauty will be released on Blu-ray; it was the first Platinum Edition title to get the High-Def treatment back in 2008. It remains to be seen what Disney does to make this release stand apart from the previous one. A digital restoration is certain at this point, as all the Diamond Edition titles get the most polished and sparkling treatment on Blu-ray.

Which means the upcoming slate for Diamond Edition releases looks something like this:

October 2013: The Little Mermaid
Spring 2014: The Jungle Book
Fall 2014: Sleeping Beauty

Titles yet to get release dates but are part of the prestigious Diamond Collection are Aladdin, 101 Dalmatians and Pinocchio.
