Alma-DreamWorksIt was a pretty normal day for this Rotocospers writer when I suddenly stumbled upon a news article from three years ago that changed everything.

DreamWorks Animation has produced 26 movies and has announced 10 more upcoming feature films. And it has another 17 projects in development. From amongst all those, here’s the one one you should be really excited about: Alma (besides the How To Train Your Dragon sequels because, well, dragons!).

How-To-Train-Your-Dragon-Toothless
Awwww, look at that adorable little dragon! Raaaawr!
(Sorry. I like dragons)

Alma (Spanish for soul) is a 2009 Animated Short Film written and directed by Rodrigo Blass, a former Pixar animator. It’s a creepy, beautiful short story and if you only watch one animated short film from now until The Blue Umbrella plays before Monsters University, it has to be this one. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it. Seriously, you have to watch it.

Did you watch it? No? What are you waiting for?

Okay, now that you’ve seen it, we can continue. Although it’s in early development and no plausible release date has been announced, DreamWorks is adapting it into a feature as the LA Times reported back in 2010. Guillermo del Toro, director of the extremely creepy Pan’s Labyrinth, is producing and acting as godfather to the project. While he oversaw the Kung Fu Panda production, this is more Del Toro’s style and his involvement guarantees a creepy yet heartfelt movie. Blass will direct and Megan Holley (Sunshine Cleaning) is penning the script.

Last we heard, Del Toro said the movie is in “visual development” in June 2012. We’ll keep you updated when we learn more about this exciting project.

Pablo Ruiz is a Colombian filmmaker. Movies like Toy Story, The Lion King and Aladdin made him fall in love with the art form and now he hopes to dedicate his life to telling stories, hopefully for Pixar (if they go back to doing original films). Some of his ambitions are making a movie as emotionally impacting as Toy Story 3, meeting JK Rowling, and petting a million dogs. Follow him on Twitter (@PabloRV7).
