tarzan-3d-teaser-posterA new trailer for the motion-capture, adventure animated film Tarzan 3D has finally arrived online.

Despite having hired American actors for the motion capture and to do the English voices, this trailer is entirely in German. That being said, there isn’t much dialogue anyway, so you don’t need to speak German (or any language for that matter) to understand what’s going on. There is even an exchange between Tarazan and Jane that, even in German, seems suspiciously like the dialogue from the Disney version of the story.

Despite being released in just a few months, news regarding Tarzan 3D has been rather sparse. The only other news we’ve reported about the film was the initial casting announcement over a year ago.

There have been many iterations of Edgar Rice Burroughs’s famous literary character, Tarzan, over the years. Most involve Tarzan being stranded as a baby and being raised by apes with zero remembrance of his human life and language. Constantine Films’ version, however, takes a different route: Tarzan arrives on the island via a helicopter crash as a 3 year old. It’s nothing radical, but still will be interesting how this version plays out. The fact that it’s animation does immediately raise comparison’s between Tarzan 3D and Disney’s Tarzan, which was a visual and storytelling achievement.

Regarding the trailer itself, the motion-capture animation seemed rather clunky. It’s pretty at times and just plain awkward at others. I can already tell that this movie will suffer from the uncanny valley syndrome, that famously turns off audiences (see: Beowulf and Mars Needs Moms). The actual scenery is very beautiful, but still doesn’t feel entirely real. I’m actually a bit confused with this movie: is it going for super realism like Avatar? Or is going for a less realist, more cartoony style?

Tarzan 3D swings into German theatres October 10, 2013. There is no word yet on a US release date.
