Remember that awesome Popeye animation test footage that Sony Pictures Animation released online a while ago? And do you remember how disappointed you were when the studio announced it would no longer make it? Well there is a possibility we might still get that film, or at least a variant of that film, as Deadline recently reported that Sony hired T.J Fixman to write it.
T.J. Fixman has mainly worked on video game productions as a writer and wrote the soon to be released Ratchet & Clank animated feature. It will be interesting to see how the upcoming Ratchet and Clank film will be received and what that reception could potentially mean for this film. At this point it’s hard to judge if he’s the right person for the job, but hopefully some of his upcoming projects turn out fantastic.
While it’s great news that we might still get this Popeye film, what does the fact that T.J Fixman was hired to write it mean? Is Genndy Tartakovsky still involved in the project, as he was the guy who originally came up with this idea and worked on it as a director up until the point it was cancelled? And, if so, was he never writing, but only directing it?
In case you missed the animation test that was publicly released in 2014, you can check it out below!
What do you think of this news? Are you excited to hear that the Popeye feature is still in production at Sony?
