The-Croods-Umbrella-SceneDreamworks has not had a good year. Between The Rise of the Guardians $87 million write-down, and the 350 layoffs that are going to ensue, they are in need of some good news. Who knew that they would just have to go back a few million years in order to succeed?

The Croods, which was just released on March 22nd, has succeeded in beating out Olympus Has Fallen in order to reach a number one spot for the weekend. It has made about $44.7 million domestically, and $108 million globally. These numbers stay fairly on par with Dreamworks’ popular movie, How to Train Your Dragon, which made $43.3 million domestically in it’s first weekend, and about $500 million overall.

“This is a terrific opening,” said Fox president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson. “And with the spring holiday ahead of us, audiences will continue to seek this movie out.”

Right now, audiences are rating The Croods at about 87% positive, with critics giving it 65% on Rotten Tomatoes, so hopefully the film will continue to succeed, because, let’s face it, if Dreamworks doesn’t discover fire soon, they will be sure to go extinct.
