The latest installment in Blue Sky’s Ice Age franchise now has a title (that you may or may not already know about) and a new release date.

Deadline recently reported that Ice Age five is now officially titled Ice Age: Collision Course. Some fans may have already suspected that this would be the official title, especially after seeing this picture from this year’s Licensing Fair:

To go along with a new title, the film also has a new release date. Originally set for July 15, 2016, it is now moved to July 22, 2016. This will spare the film from having to compete against Sony’s Ghostbusters reboot. That being said, this new date will pit it against Warner Bros.’ King Arthur movie, so the film will still have to contend with a big summer blockbuster.

Mike Thurmeier, who co-directed the last two Ice Age films with Carlos Saldanha and Steve Martino respectively, will co-direct this film with Galen T. Chu. Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, and Queen Latifah are expected to return.

The Ice Age franchise has long been a mainstay for Blue Sky Studios ever since the first film bowed in 2002. But while its box office prowess remains strong (the last film was the highest-grossing animated film of 2012), reception among critics and animation fans suggest the films’ plots have grown stale with each successive installment. Blue Sky has yet to lock down or reveal a screenwriter for Collision Course, but hopefully they can bring on someone who can bring in a fresh perspective and much-needed energy to this latest outing.

What do you think? Do you have any thoughts on the new title or the release date?
