Earlier today, Pixar released four new character posters for Brave in an exclusive to Entertainment Weekly. The article also features an interview with co-director Mark Andrews, who explains more about each of the characters featured in the new posters.

The character posters showcase Merida; King Fergus and Queen Elinor; the fathers of Merida’s suitors, Lords Macintosh, MacGuffin and Dingwall; and Merida’s triplet baby brothers Hamish, Hubert and Harris. My personal favorite is the one with the King and Queen, as it juxtaposes the boisterous Fergus with the stoic and serious Elinor. Merida’s poster is the creatively weakest of the four, as it’s essentially a ripoff of the US movie poster released last month. The posters are simple, vibrant and just plain beautiful. If these posters are any indication of what the final film will look like, Brave will be major eye candy for moviegoers.

(Kelly Macdonald); King Fergus (Billy Connolly) & Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson); Lords Macintosh (Craig Ferguson), MacGuffin (Kevin McKidd) & Dingwall (Robbie Coltrane); Hamish, Hubert, and Harris (The Triplets)

In addition to the new posters, Andrews fleshes out each of the main characters a bit more for us. Talking about Merida and the plot, we learn:

Merida is a teenage princess in the Scottish kingdom of DunBroch, and as such, she’s expected to marry one of three suitors from neighboring clans. But Merida, being the fiery free spirit that she is, wants nothing to do with the tradition. “How she resists [this custom] leads to more and more trouble that ultimately endangers not only the kingdom, but her loved ones,” says Andrews. One of Merida’s choices involves seeking the assistance of a witch, who grants the princess a wish that goes horribly wrong.
