Yet another amusing cross-breed between animation and popular culture is set to happen this week. Today, in fact.

On tonight’s episode of Jeopardy, the long-running game show will make history by having Puss in Boots, a character from the Shrek franchise, be the first-ever CG-animated character to guest-host the show for a full category. Titled ‘Not as Great as Puss in Boots’, the category will feature recorded footage of the character as he gives clues and answers to the contestants for each segment. He will be voiced by Eric Bauza, the TV voice for Puss on the current Netflix series.

This is very timely, as next Friday will see five new episodes of DreamWorks Animation’s The Adventures of Puss in Boots debut on Netflix. Here is the general plot description for the following episodes:

In these new episodes, Puss and Dulcinea embark on an adventure to find the Fountain of Youth to save Puss’ old mentor, El Guante Blanco. When Dulcinea becomes enchanted with new powers, Puss helps her learn how to control her newfound strength.

It’s definitely a gimmick if I’ve ever seen one, but it is a clever and rather unexpected example of cross-promotion (for what its worth).

This episode of Jeopardy will premiere tonight at 7 PM (if you’re interested), while the next five episodes of The Adventures of Puss in Boots will bow next Friday.

What do you think? Any thoughts on this news?
