Wow, this is probably the biggest Pixar news to drop in a long time. The Incredibles 2 and Cars 3 are happening!

Today in a conference call to shareholders, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that Pixar is indeed making The Incredibles 2, a sequel to the universally beloved Brad Bird film The Incredibles. Iger also confirmed that Cars 3 is also in development, something that many had suspected for a while.

The Incredibles 2

Not much was given about this highly anticipated film, except that Brad Bird is penning the screenplay for the sequel. Bird always said that he was open to and thinking about an Incredibles sequel, but only if the story was right. Well, looks like he has cracked that nut! (Check out our ideas for the sequel’s story here.)

Bird is known for having very tight scripts and very little revisions are needed (it actually holds the record for the least amount of storyboards of any Pixar film, a fact I recently learned on my visit to the studio). So this could suggest that once Bird knows what he wants, production could go very quickly. Disney didn’t say who would direct the film, but it seems obvious here that it’s going to be Bird after he finishes up with Tomorrowland, which releases later this year.

We know that the studio is going to re-release The Incredibles in 3D, which will definitely spark interest in the franchise again (as if it ever left). No word on when it will be released, but it most likely will come before the release of the new sequel, much like Toy Story 3D opened a month before Toy Story 3.

This news suggests that The Incredibles 2 will also be made in 3D, since Disney/Pixar is putting so much effort to convert the old one. A 3D release would be a great addition. No release date for The Incredibles 2 was announced.

Also, it looks like Pixar employees were excited to finally be able to talk about The Incredibles 2:

Looks like the cat is outta the bag! 🙂 #Incredibles2

I’m just glad I don’t have to lie to my friends and fam anymore “@olindsayo: Looks like the cat is outta the bag! 🙂 #Incredibles2”

Cars 3

The Cars 3 announcement didn’t come as a shock to anyone. Back in October, Michael Wallis, voice of sheriff in the series, accidentally revealed that Cars 3 was in the works and would be apart historic Route 99.

Cars 3 isn’t really news that gets hardcore Pixar fans excited. But hopefully it will be more in line with the feel of the first film, rather than the second, which was panned by critics. No release date was announced.

Either way, this is incredible (get it?) news for Pixar fans. The Incredibles is the one franchise that fans have been clamoring for a sequel for over a decade. It’s also the only sequel that fans seem to approve of Pixar making except the Toy Story films.

Pixar has stated that it will start releasing “one and a half” original films per year, meaning one original film and one sequel. This shows its new strategy of leveraging its current franchises while continuing to build new ones. Pixar’s slate is pretty full at the moment, with Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur and Finding Dory coming up in 2015 and 2016. So it’s unlikely that we’ll see The Incredibles 2 and Cars 3 until 2018 at the earliest.
