It’s been an incredible weekend for Disney and Pixar’s latest animated film Incredibles 2.

The long-awaited sequel officially became the highest grossing animated film of all time in North America, as well as earned the honor of highest grossing movie of all time that is not rated PG-13.

As of July 9, Incredibles 2 has made a total of $504.382 million at the box office in 24 days of being released in North America (Forbes). The previous record for an animated film was held by 2016’s Finding Dory, which made $486.2 million.

It should be noted that this record does not take inflation into account. When adjusted for inflation, the highest-grossing modern animated film released theatrically only one time is DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek 2 (2004), which would gross around $650.8 million today. If we start including older films adjusted for inflation, the winner would be Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (1937).

In addition to taking the current animation box office crown, Incredibles 2 also became the highest grossing film rated either G, PG, R, NC-17, or X – animated or otherwise. The ten films ranking before it on the list are all live-action and rated PG-13. Traditionally kid-targeted franchises like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Star Wars, and Star Trek have graduated to the more popular PG-13 rating, taking them out of the running.

Incredibles 2 continues to open in theaters around the world, so it will be interesting to look at its final global numbers after its full box office run.

Via Forbes and Cartoon Brew.

Do you think Incredibles 2 deserves this honor? Are there any animated films released over the last few years that you think should have had higher or lower box office numbers?
