“The cost of freedom is high. Always has been. But it’s a price I’m willing to pay.”

I’ve loved the Marvel movies since they started the series with Iron Man in 2008.  Captain America: The Winter Soldier was the darkest one to date and still one of my favorites. This movie was so much fun on the big screen.

This film has a magnificent musical score. A lot of Marvel movies have music that just sort of blends together, but this one has a very distinct sound and I love the heroic undertones. The visuals and particularly the action scenes in the film are jaw-dropping. They’re also willing to show some pretty disturbing stuff, like when they “wipe” the Winter Soldier to send him after Steve.

The acting is stellar all around. Of course Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson have always been fun in their roles, and I really like Robert Redford. Anthony Mackie is good as Sam and I like how he plays off of the others. Sebastian Stan does a great job making the Winter Soldier feel like a totally different person from Bucky.

The themes of freedom and security, trust and secrecy are well examined and timely. A lot of the ideas explored in Civil War are introduced in this film. I also really enjoy the stuff about how the world is changing and Steve has to adapt with it.

Overall Captain America: The Winter Soldier is one of my favorite Marvel movies, and one of my favorite movies period. My one nitpick is it maybe could have been a little shorter. But I think it’s among the best of what the genre has to offer.
